READING
Chapter Book Reading: 30 minutes is assigned daily even on weekends, therefore the fluidity of the story is maintained. More than 30 minutes of reading is encouraged if allowed per individual student. Students use their student planner log to outline their chapter book reading. Please review the student planner together at home.

Reading Test Taking Strategies
1. Read the title and predict. (What do you think the article/story is about) Write Fiction or Non-Fiction.
2. As you read the passage write a MAIN IDEA beside each paragraph.
3. At the end of the passage decide if the author wrote it to PERSUADE, INFORM, or ENTERTAIN. (PIE)
4. Write a summary at the end. (Short Version)
-If the purpose was to ENTERTAIN then write-
“Somebody wanted something but ____. So ____. Then _____".
-If the purpose was to PERSUADE, and INFORM then write –
THE 5 W’s – Who, What, When, Where, Why?
5. Read each question carefully.
6. Prove your answers by underlining with your pencil the answer in the passage and writing the reason for choosing the answer. (Text Evidence)
7. Read each answer choice carefully. Eliminate any silly choices so that you can narrow it down.
8. Write the question number next to your underlining. (Text Evidence)
